The British front line ran along the forward edge of the trees on the left. Three of the copses (Mark, Luke and John) that
existed in
centre middle distance is the Cross of Sacrifice in Luke Copse Cemetery and in the right foreground is Queen s Cemetery;
both contain the remains of many City Battalion men. On

foreground leads to the entrance to Sheffield Park and Railway Hollow Cemetery beyond it (signposts on the extreme left
of picture). Here the Sheffield Memorial building was erected having been designed by Mr
Corporal in
badly overgrown in the
Graves Commission and the Sheffield Council it was decided to replace the ruined building with a more durable structure
on the same foundations. Five acres of the original were sold off to leave the more manageable plot that remains today.
The work was carried out by the CWGC in
