of the Dead focuses on Roman funerary commemoration from the first century
bc
to the fifth century AD in Italy and western Europe. Of primary interest are the
epitaphs, often in combination with images, that were carved on thousands of tombs
and funerary monuments in the Roman world. It was important to Romans of almost
all social classes that their memory be preserved for future generations, and they used
funerary inscriptions to define themselves and to establish a dialogue with their own
society. This study spans the gap between archaeological and epigraphic approaches
to funerary monuments and thus enables personal narratives to be told by exploring
a variety of themes. The inscribed texts on the monuments are put into the physical
surroundings of the suburban cemeteries that once encircled Roman settlements, and
the archaeological context, including the grave itself and the grave goods accompanying
the burial, forms an integral part of the discussion on epitaphs. By analysing not only
monuments from Italy and Rome itself, but also extensively widening the study to
memorials from France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, the Low Countries, and Britain,
Maureen Carroll enables an assessment of the disparate material from the western
provinces against the background of funerary commemoration at the centre of the
Empire. The information these inscribed documents and archaeological artefacts
contain
—
often so very different from that preserved in other types of ancient written
sources
—
makes Roman funerary monuments an ideal vehicle for exploring many
aspects of life, death and human relations in the Roman world.
