gies in biological and medical research, including advanced microscopy
and spectroscopy methods. These are combined with the latest comput¬
er technology for such tasks as pattern recognition, and the applications
range from cell biology and cancer research to the detection of allergens.
This is an account of a three-year research program funded by the Ger¬
man government, in which physicists and physical chemists set off
together with biologists and physicians to develop new techniques for
medical and biological problems and ended up with sophisticated scien¬
tific solutions and innovative equipment,
