"Born in Budapest, Goldfinger spent his formative years in Paris in the 1920s where his friends included Max Ernst, Lee Miller and Man Ray. After marrying an Englishwoman, Ursula Blackwell, he moved to England where he built his family home in Hampstead, a property now owned by the National Trust. Post-war commissions led to successful office buildings, and eventually to large-scale projects at Elephant and Castle, and social housing incorporating tower blocks in the East and North of London. Controversial in his lifetime, it is only after his death that his most significant work has been widely recognised as a major contribution to British architecture.
