The town was founded in
the town the Magdeburg Rights. This was in line with the King s idea of
modernising
the uncultivated regions. The first settlement in
Hazrad, who was also the first alderman. The town was granted a set of rights
and privileges. The street layout of the city centre was also established in the
14th century and has been preserved until today.
Harsh, mountain climate, treacherous floods and the
overspills, close proximity to the country border and lack of defence walls made
the town vulnerable to attacks and reduced the town s income derived from
trade. Devastating invasion of the Hussite army in
fires hampered the natural development of the town. Later, in the 17th century,
Krościenko
starosts, rulers of the neighbouring lands, who tried to deprive
independence and sovereignty and by the ominous
Krościenko
enemy of the town was the plague, which owing to the town s close proximity
to the popular trade routes spread freely and decimated the town citizens.
The 19th century was the time, when the curative properties of the climate
and mineral waters were discovered. Then, the town proprietor,
initiated the development of the spa resort by building mineral baths and
a modest spa house. Yet incompetent management and competition coming
