Soviet army reached its borders.
At that point the Government decided to unite its regular army, „domo-
brans with
„ustaša

members of fascist volunteer movement. It was also
decided that adolescent boys, 7th and 8th graders of Grammar schools
-
who were that far exempt of army service and lived in towns which were not
overtaken by partisans
-
were to be brought to Zagreb. They were to com¬
plete the school there, as well as military training which would make them
military reserves.
This book is a war journal of architect
Neđat Sulejmanpašić
who was
mobilized in Sarajevo and taken on
28
December
1944
with other students
to Zagreb were they were, surprisingly to many of them, given
ustaša
uni¬
forms (they were hoping to get
domobran
uniforms) and were subjected to
difficult training conditions. Food was lacking and sanitary conditions were
bad. The city was attacked by allied air-force. Many students were fleeing to
their homes. In May
1945,
together with remnants of the army and many
civilians, these student forces were on the roads to West, in refugee convoys,
were moving was difficult, and under partisan attacks. The aim was to reach
allied forces and to avoid surrender to partisans or Soviet forces.
Most of those troops and refugees were stopped, after German surren¬
der, by British soldiers in Austria and
Kärnten,
on the field of Gosposvet
(Das Zollfeld),
near
Bleiburg,
and were refused the entry into their zone of
occupation which resulted in imprisonment by partisan units.
Some of the prisoners were executed and others were worked to death,
starvation and illnesses.
Neđat Sulejmanpašić
ended up with other students and
prisoners in a camp in Zagreb and after a long march in
Bjelovar
were students
were kept and afterwards divided into groups and taken to their homes.
At the time, communication channels were not working, so Nedat s
groups has after a long wandering been brought to prisoners camp in Sa¬
rajevo, where, following an amnesty, he was liberated.
Those events

journal is unique be¬
cause he wrote day after day about many details of his training in Zagreb,
