SUMMARY
The author presents the overall attitude of August Cardinal
Hlond
(1881-1948),
the Primate of Poland in the years
1926-1948,
about the most important problems of the Polish nation and
state as well as the ideologies and political trends of his time
(Communism, Socialism, Nazism, Italian Fascism). From the
first part of the book we learn of Hlond s views on Marshall
Józef Piłsudski
and his collaborators, Roman Dmowski and the
National Democracy, the Polish Peasants Party and
Wincenty
Witos,
as well as other Polish political parties and politicians
before the Second World War. The author also presents the con¬
cepts of the state and the form of government propagated by the
Primate in his speeches and writings. We also learn of his atti¬
tudes towards Soviet Russia, Germany, France, Czechoslovakia,
and Hungary. From
1926-1939,
Hlond was the greatest moral
authority in Poland, trying to unite the society despite its divi¬
sions. He stood for a strong (but democratic) state, justice, and
social solidarity. He denounced secularisation, Communism,
and Fascism. He wanted Poland to have a strong international
position.
In the second part of the book, the author presents the Pri¬
mate s efforts during the Second World War (in emigration in
Rome,
Lourdes,
and
Savoie,
and then in Nazi captivity) to re¬
store Poland s independence, lost to the Germans and Soviets.
During that period he also revised his social views.

The last part of the study deals with the post-war period
(1945-1948)
when, after his return to his homeland, the Primate
tried to oppose atheisation and to combat Marxist ideology in
the so-called People s Poland held captive by communism. His
greatest achievement at that time was to install the Polish
church administration in Poland s western and northern re¬
gions. The author also writes about his attitude towards the
anticommunist opposition (K.
Popiel,
S.
Mikołajczyk),
the Polish
emigrée
community, as well as towards the Jews and the Ger¬
mans.
