| adam_text | Since their origins over half a century ago, the Case Study Houses have ranked among
the classics of architectural modernism. Thanks to the combined effort of Arts
Architecture
publisher and editor John Entenza, the congenial photographs of Julius Shulman
and the architects including Pierre Koenig, Richard
Eames, the Case Study Houses have become widely recognized as part of an
avant-garde laboratory of housing.
Yet the proof of the pudding is in the eating: The quality, originality, and viability of
residential design becomes apparent through use over time. The Case Study Houses
have occupied a place in the history of architecture for many years
their significance in light of their presence today? How have the houses aged, and
how do they reflect changes of use and ownership? What is their contribution to
contemporary building culture and its values? And what light do they shed on
state-of-the-art housing design?
In a journey into the present reality of the Case Study Houses, the two authors of this
book have systematically visited and photographed the houses and their owners.
Viewing these projects through the lens not only of practicing architects, teachers and
critics, but also of representatives of Old Europe confronting the achievements of
the New World, they describe and elaborate the stories of some of the most thrilling
residential projects of the last century.

of Texas at Austin, and is currently a faculty member at the school of architecture in Lille, France.
Architect and specialized in exhibition design, she also practices architectural photography.
Thomas
Paul Virilio. He was the recipient of the Delano Aldrich and Villa Medicis Outside the Walls scholarship
awards in
several housing projects, he has now widened the scope of his practice to include more complex, large-
scale architectural projects.
