Hopkins University. He also serves as Director of
the
Hopkins Hospital. He is founder and Chairman of
the Board of the American Pain Foundation, and
has received major awards from the American Pain
Society and the Society of Neurological Surgeons,
as well as the Jacob Javits
tor Award.
Allan I. Basbaum, PhD, is Professor and Chair of
the Department of Anatomy, University of Califor¬
nia San Francisco, and is a member of the W.M.

mission and control of nociceptive messages and
the molecular mechanisms that contribute to persis¬
tent pain induced by tissue and nerve injury. A past
Councillor and Treasurer of
Editor-in-Chief of PAW. He received the F.W.L.
Kerr Memorial Award from the American Pain
Society, was awarded the Bristol Myers Squibb Prize
for Distinguished Pain Research, and is a Fellow of
the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
The international Association for the Study of
Pain is a nonprofit, interdisciplinary organisation
devoted to understanding the mechanisms of pain and
improving the care of patients uith pain through
research, education, and communication. ¡ASP Press
publishes timefy, High-quality, and reasonably priced
booL· relating to pain research and treatment.
Andy Dray, PhD, currently
Zeneca Research and Development and Director of the
Global Analgesia Strategy, has served as Head of the
Laboratory of Neuropharmacology, MRC Neurophar-
macology Research Unit, Cambridge (UK); Associate
Professor of Pharmacology at University of Arizona;
Head of Pharmacology, Sandoz Institute for Medical
Research, London; and Director of Pharmacology,
AstraZeneca Research and Development, Montreal.
Dr. Dray s research interests include
neuropharmacology, drug discovery and development,
and pain and analgesia.
Ronald Dubner, DDS, PhD, is Professor and Chair
of the Department of
of Maryland Dental School. His present research focuses
on molecular, neurochemical, and physiological
changes in the nervous system following tissue and
nerve injury and on pharmacological strategies for
controlling acute and persistent pain. He has received
the U.S. Public Health Service Distinguished and
Meritorious Service Medals, the Bristol-Myers-Squibb
Award for excellence in pain research, the American
Pain Society Kerr Award for research excellence, and
the IASP John J.
for major contributions to pain research and treat¬
ment. Dr. Dubner is a past Editor-in-Chief of PAIN
and is an honorary member of IASP.
Robert H. Dworkin, PhD, is Professor of Anesthesiol-
ogy, Neurology, Oncology, and Psychiatry and Director
of the Anesthesiology Clinical Research Center at the
University of Rochester School of Medicine and
Dentistry. He is the Associate Editor of Clinical Journal
of Pain and Chair of the International Conference on
the Mechanisms and Treatment of Neuropathic Pain.
Dr. Dworkin s recent research has focused on the identi¬
fication of risk factors for the development ot chronic
pain and the possibly causal relationship between acute
and chronic pain, including the hypothesis that reduc¬
ing acute pain in patients with herpes zoster will
prevent the development of postherpetic neuralgia.
Christine
Translational Pain Research Program at the Brigham
and Women s Hospital, Harvard Medical School; a pain
specialist and anesthesiologist at the Brigham and
Women s Hospital; and
Children s Hospital, Boston. Dr. Sang serves on the
Boards of Directors of the American Pain Society and
the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, and is a
founding member of the Neuropathic Pain Institute.
She is a Special Government Employee with the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration. Her own research
program evaluates novel potential analgesics to target
selective mechanisms ot pain.
