individuality and connect us to our past. American Regional Folklore:
A Sourcebook and Research Guide provides users with all the tools
they ll need to explore the scores of resources currently available
on the oral tradition of the folk.
Features include:
Fully annotated bibliographies on the folklore of each of
eight regions of the United States
Engaging overview essays by folklore scholars for each of
the U.S. regions
A list of literary authors who incorporate folklore themes in their
writings, together with a brief list of some of their major works
A list of folklore-related museums, with addresses and
phone numbers, a list of folklore journals, and, when
possible, a list of websites
Divided into two parts, the first introduces readers to the
world of folklore research, both within libraries and beyond,
including museums, historical societies, festivals, newspapers,
and storytelling societies. Chapters in part two present the
country broken down into eight geographic regions. Each chapter
opens with an engaging introductory essay by a noted scholar,
then follows with an annotated bibliography of folklore sources
divided into seven subject areas. From locating a suitable library
to constructing a research strategy, users will discover how to
navigate the challenges and frustrations as well as experience the
joys of locating useful information.
From tall tales and ghost stories to legends of shipwrecks and
sea serpents, this work is designed for people who need to locate
folklore sources for a community or school project, a presentation
or a performance, or who simply want to learn a bit about their
own region s history and legends.
