CHANGES IN THE RECREATION SPACE
OF SELECTED TOWNS
OF WIELKOPOLSKA PROV,INCE
IN THE YEARS 1975-1997
A comprehensive evaluation was madę of changes occurring in the recreation space of selected towns of
Wielkopolska province over the years 1975-1997 The changes analysed were those in the structural, qualitativc and
functional properties of the object of study In making the evaluation, two groups of recreationists were considered: the
town residents and tourists
The theoretical dimension of the study involves an analysis of the chief research conceptions which work towards
a definition of the notion of recreation space and seek an insight into the mechanisms of its change
The cognitive aspect of the study embraces, among other things:
1 determining the subjcct matterof the research in a spatio-temporal approach through the selection and division
of the study period and a multivariateclassification of towns of Wielkopolska province in order to choose those suitable
for further detailed analysis;
2 evaluating the attractiveness of the towns in terms of recreation and tourismon the basis of opinions of the region s
inhabitants;
3 identifying the recreation space of a lown as well as making a survey and choice of crileria of its classification;
4 evaluating changes in the structural, qualitative and functional aspects of the recreation space of the towns; and
5 identifying factors which control the development of the towns and their recreational functions, as well as
determining their effect on the process of change in the towns recreation space
The methodological dimension of the study involves the working out of a method for a comprehensive evaluation
of a town s recreation space The main objective in the choice of methodological solutions was to grasp the dependence
among the three aspects of the subject matter of the research; structural, qualitative and functional
The spatial rangę of the study embraces six towns of the present Wielkopolska province: Chodzieć, Gostyń, Kórnik,
Leszno, Sieraków, and Trzcianka The set of criteria behind this selection of towns included those features that were
considered to determine the development of the towns and their recreation space The most important were: the town s
size, migration type and functional type, tourist potential, and the level and directions of development of the tourist
function
