Use of Botulinum Toxin in Overactive Bladder 667
J. Corcos, B. Schurch
Based on a workshop at the International Continence Society in August 2005, this
supplement discusses the use of botulinum toxin A in overactive bladder. This editorial
explains the context and outlines the four chapters that follow it.
Understanding the Role of Botulinum Toxin A in the Treatment of the Overactive I eu ACME I ^0
Bladder—More than Just Muscle Relaxation
A Apostohdis, A. Haferkamp, K.R. Aoki
Lack of ultrastructural changes in the detrusor muscle and persistence of treatment effects
following single and repeat doses of botulinum neurotoxin type A injected into the bladder
wall support an alternative mechanism of action to that seen in skeletal muscle.
Botulinum Toxin in the Treatment of Neurogenic Bladder in Adults and Children 679
ft Schurch, H Schulte Baukloh
Intradetrusor injections of botulinum toxin A dramatically reduce detrusor pressure and any
associated risk of reflux, and produce improvements in other key urodynamic parameters,
relieving symptoms of incontinence and restoring quality of life in adult and child neurogenic
bladder populations.
Efficacy of Botulinum Toxin A in the Treatment of Female Idiopathic Detrusor Overactivity 685
Incontinence: Long Term Results of a Prospective Nonrandomised Study
M Werner S. Kuschel. DM. Schmid 8. Schuessler
Results of this study show that a single injection of botulinum toxin type A can provide
prolonged restoration of continence to patients who have idiopathic detrusor overactivity
and are inadequately managed on oral anticholinergics.
Managing Patients with Neurogenic Detrusor Overactivity—A Global Approach 691
P. Oenys, A Schnitzler, N. Roche
Patients with urinary incontinence due to neurogenic detrusor overactivity also require
treatment for secondary disorders and the general population s normal range of diseases.
Effective communication between health care professionals improves the management and
quality of life of the patient.
