This account of the development of the English language is especially
designed for foreign students of the English language. Its aim is to famili¬
arize them with the linguistic history of English and prepare them for
advanced courses and examinations.
After an introduction into historical linguistics and linguistic recon¬
struction, and a survey of the Germanic ancestor, the periods Old English,
Middle English, and Early Modern English are presented. The treatment of
the periods include the linguistic levels phonology (with orthography),
morphology, grammar and vocabulary, as well as the historical context. It
is rounded up by a comparison of British English and American English,
and some concluding remarks on the contemporary situation of the Eng¬
lish language.
