its sister specialty in adults. While it is increasingly
recognised thai, ch udren with life-limiting
conditions have distinct needs that must be
addressed in a child-centred context, it is still
unusual in most countries for children to have the
same access to expert palliative care that many
adults can now expect. For too many children,
dying remains unnecessarily isolated and
uncomfortable.
The Oxford Textbook of Palliative Care for Children
is for all those caring for children suffering from terminal or
conditions, and their families. Its aim is to help professionals in their goal of
maximising the quality of life for such children, adding
even when it is no longer possible to add years to their life .
The book aims to do this in three ways. Firstly, it provides a practical resource,
offering rational approaches to care, reviewing the evidence-base, and
considering practical and ethical issues. The book addresses areas as diverse
as symptom control, spirituality, education, and service development. AH
set in a multidimensional. holistic context, considering the child s
psychosocial,
Secondly, the book explores the whole breadth of palliative care across all
diagnoses. Palliative care in children extends well beyond the traditional
adult, cancer-based model. The Oxford Textbook addresses the full range of
life-limiting conditions in childhood, from the rapid progression that
characterises some malignancies to the slow deterioration over years or
decades often associated with cerebral palsy, metabolic conditions, and
other
Lastly, the book brings together in one place the experience and knowledge of
a group of professionals working in palliative care in children, from many
countries and across many divides. Contributors include doctors, nurses,
educators, therapists and social workers, as well as many other disciplines,
who come from children s hospices and community-based palliative care
teams as well as hospital-based teams, and with diverse backgrounds mat
include intensive care, general practice, oncology, and general paediatrics.
They have in common an understanding of the needs of children with
life-limiting conditions, and experience in meeting them.
Whether it is only occasionally in the course of other work with children,
or is thei r main interest and specialty, all those who care for children with
life-limiting conditions and support their families, wilt find this book an
indispensable, authoritative and comprehensive resource.
