Our ability to ward-off pathogens in our environment, including those that can colonize our exterior and/or interior surfaces, de¬ pends on the immunity systems. This volume of CTMI, entitled Anti¬ microbial Peptides and Human Disease, is dedicated to the role of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in the innate host defense system of homo sapiens against infectious agents. These roles include their antimicrobial action and the ability to regulate the production of host com¬ pounds that are import in the innate and adaptive immune responses. Authors of the chapters review the literature and discuss the medical significance of AMPs as related to the host response to infections at different anatomical sites, the biochemistry and cell biology of AMP produc¬ tion and the mechanisms by which microbes defend themselves against AMPs.
