THE BRONZE AGE SETTLEMENT
IN THE ALEISK STEPPE. VOLUME I
.
Active archaeological researches of the Bronze Age sites had been carried out in the ter¬
ritory of Eurasia in the latest decades. It helped the scientists find the solutions of serious
problems of the received results interpretation. However, in some regions of Russia such
studying leaves
mach
to be desired. It especially concerns the west-siberian part of steppe and
forest-steppe Ob-Irtyshye.
The age under analysis is marked by bronze metallurgy practice in the III millennium
B.C. It was an important step in the development of productive forces, because there appeared
an opportunity of serial production of various wares. It changed the character of trade-
economic links. Bronze tools are one of many showings of the age characteristics. More im¬
portant changes took place in the population life s work organization in the wide territory of
Eurasia. Many branch economy began to form: such economy combined appropriating works
(collecting, hunting, fishery) and producting branches (stock-raising, agriculture) and it af¬
fected demographic and social organization of ancient societies of the age. It also affected
many other spheres of people s life (ideology, art style of life, way of life, etc.). All said
above took place also under the influence of natural and climatic factors and the basic was
increase of aridness (Kosarev M.F.,
1991).
A large number of the Bronze Age settlements were found and researched in many re¬
gions of Russia. Predominant among them are locations and sites. On such background sta¬
tionary complexes stand out. They were called economic and cultural centres characterized by
many artifact s and traces that point at the significant concentration of population and long
period of living there. As a rule, household (supplementary) and specialized types of buildings
are found in the area of such settlements and endeavours of architectural and planning solu¬
tions are traced. Specialized, production or religious structures and traces of their functioning
show a higher status of economic and cultural centre in comparison with other settlements
(Gorbunov V.S.,
1992).
There are numerous research results of such sites in forest-steppe
Volgo-Uralye, South Zauralye, Nizhneye Pritobolye and other regions of Eurasia. Revelation
of economic and cultural centres of the Bronze Age in the south of Western Siberia (Forest-
steppe Altay in particular) stalls. One of such objects is the settlement of Berezovaya

to get the data and file with concrete maintenance knowledge about the
culture of ancient people lived on the territory of foothills-flat part of the modern Altay terri¬
tory in the Early Bronze Age. Among the problems, that stood before the members of the ex¬
pedition, it is necessary to mention the following: study of the geographic location and natural
conditions of the territory where the remains of the ancient site was fixed; formation of infor¬
mational base for the possible reconstruction of the paleography of the region; explanation of
the bedding conditions of the settlement cultural layer; gathering and preparation of numerous
samples and test for their further analysis; working up of the found materials; getting of the
preliminary definitions; and others. On the ways of the science-research activity, made by the
authors during the study of archaeological objects, is the integration of many specialists from
different fields of science and the aim is gathering of wider and more objective information
about ancient history of Altay.
Before the discovering of the Berezovaya
Luka
settlement in the territory of Forest-
steppe Altay, bush and nest character was vividly seen in the settlements of the Early
Bronze Age (Kiroushin Y.F., Abdulganeev M.T., Shamshin
A.B., 1983).
Accumulation of
such sites with weak cultural layer are well known on bank rivers old beds and other places
and even in Mountain Altay (Kiroushin Y.F.,
2002).
Earlier such circumstances were ex¬
plained as a complex type of the economy of population of those times; the complex com¬
bined cattle-breeding, big animals hunting and developed fishery. Absence of stationary long¬
time dwellings in settlements was explained by warm climate. However, accumulated experi¬
ence proved that people in the Early Bronze Age used other criteria when choosing places for
settlements.
The data received in Berezovaya
Luka
site supplemented our knowledge about the inter¬
esting period of the Aleisk steppe territory opening. The main purpose was fuller publication
in the monograph of the received data about the results of archaeological excavations and ex¬
aminations. Besides, there are result of numerous definishions and analyses presented in the
book. They were made by lighly qualified specialists from different Russian institutions.

prospective. It will give an opportunity for more productive researches in the filld of econom¬
