Od Piławiec
do Humania
(From
Pilawce
to Human).
Old-Polish Studies
Abstract
The book entitled
Od Piławiec
do Humania focuses on selected events of Polish-
Ukrainian history from the years
1648-1768.
The corpus of data, which is mainly comprised
of handwritten accounts and old prints, familiarises the contemporary reader with the period
of military conflicts of the two neighbouring countries, and mental stereotypes connected
with the problems of war, enemy, Little and Great Homeland and Providence. The keystone
of a series of studies (except for the temporal excerpt) is built of protagonists of historic
times, such as
Bohdan
Chmielnicki or Jeremi
Wiśniowiecki.
In the perception of baroque
writers it was them who, functioning as tools and executors of God s plan, determined
the successes of military campaigns. Religious dimension is especially highlighted at the
moments of defeat (Pilawce, Human) and victory
(Zbaraż)
of the Crown army.
The dissertation is divided into two parts, and the division follows predominantly the
criterion of the genre of described works. The first passage of the book entitled
Piórem
epika
(With a Writer s Pen), composed of five sketches, opens with a study of the image of
defeat of the Crown army at Pilawce
(1648)
in occasional poetry. The analysis of dozens of
poems leads to a generalisation of a wide social impact of the unfortunate campaign, which
greatly contributed to subsequent successes of Chmielnicki. Unschooled poets (noblemen in
majority) criticised both the particular leaders and the whole army which escaped from the
battlefield upon the news of Tatars arrival. Discreditation of knights-cowards was inscribed
in various genres: lampoons, pamphlets, satires, parodies, laments and reasons.
Another study deals with a heroic defence of
Zbaraż
in
1649.
The event that was
popularised since the end of the 19th century by
Henryk
Sienkiewicz s novel entitled With
Fire and Sword
(Ogniem i mieczem)
had earlier been widely mirrored in baroque dairy
writing and literature. It is worth mentioning that until the present day, poems and rhymed
descriptions of the Polish victory have not been analysed yet. Jan Bialobocki s,
Marcin
Kuczwarewicz s,
Wojciech
Radwanski s and
Mikołaj
Frykacz s accounts are known merely
to a narrow group of specialists dealing with the history of Polish-Cossack wars. In their
several hundred-verse works, noblemen-writers did not only include descriptions of laudable
moments of siege but also moments of torment, famine and camp misery. Poetic accounts
mainly based on diary scheme, induce us to appreciate their cognitive (source) value which
has been unjustly omitted by majority of historians (in some of those accounts there are
details of siege absent from other memories and correspondence). Quoted works also have
a literary value, which should draw closer attention of literary critics. What is interesting are
rhymed accounts from the siege of
Zbaraż,
which were very popular with readers in the
17th century, and which testified to a great social demand for
heroica
on the contemporary

national
history. A careful reading of
Zbaraż
poems allowed for emphasizing many
borrowings from writers of minorum gentium by Samuel from
Skrzypną Twardowski
in
his The Civil War
(Wojna domowa) (ca.
1651-1660).
By introducing tables with passages
of sample texts compared with extracts from
Wojna domowa,
the author tried to show the
size and nature of dependency of the poem from lesser rhymed accounts.
Reconstruction of Jan Bialobocki s biography and discussion on his epic works on
Polish-Cossack military conflicts fill the subsequent parts of the book. Thanks to the library
search in the Central State Historical Archives in Lvov, it was possible to gather several
unknown documents enabling a more careful than ever presentation of the life of Royal
Secretary and courtier, Jeremi
Wiśniowiecki.
It needs to be acknowledged that poems
about the first phase of conflict with Chmielnicki (i.e.
Pochodnia wojennej sławy
and
Klar
męstwa)
have a definite literary and cognitive value. Apparently, considering their artistic
aspect they are only slightly inferior to Twardowski s
Wojna domowa.
Samuel s from
Skrzypną
poem is the object of analysis in the fourth sketch.
Wojna
domowa)
encompassing twelve years of native history
(1648-1660)
was considered the
most outstanding achievement of that Greater Polish narrative writer by his contemporaries.
It was both the poetic art and accuracy built on detailed account that contributed to this
achievement. It is known, for example that The Civil War was used as a history course
book in the
17*
and 18th centuries. Greater Polish
Maro
based his presentation of the
civil war with the Cossacks on personal experience, witness reports and written or printed
accounts. The conflict with Chmielnicki was perceived through the Catholic and nobleman s
perspective, which definitely added to a subjective evaluation of adversaries. However, against
appearances in showing national history, he made a selection, subjugating historic vision
to his own historiosophic ideas. In defeats, just like other writers, he saw God s wrath that
can be averted with moral improvement. As a nobleman, he did not write about objective
causes of the Cossack uprising blaming lascivious peasants for their attack on eternal
laws and norms.
Wojna domowa
being read today allows for capturing Sarmatian mentality
perfectly. The poem-panorama demonstrates life s
ups
and downs of the Commonwealth of
Two Nations in mid-17th century.
First part of the book is closed with a study of a forgotten poem by M. Darowski,
which presented men slaughter of
1768.
The author, who witnessed the June events, in
his poetic account reported on shocking scenes of massacre of thousands of Catholics
and Uniates. It needs to be mentioned that the text is a vital supplement of other known
accounts concerning koliszczyzna (peasant revolt in the Ukraine).
In the second part of the book
Piórem
diarysty
і
epistolografo
(With a Diarist s and
Epistologist s Pen), four studies are included. They refer to prose passages (predominantly
diaries, news and letters), on the basis of which an attempt of reconstructing some historical
facts or biographies was made.
The writing output of Samuel
Kazimierz Kuszewicz
was not recognised by historians
or literary critics. However, this Lvov inhabitant of choice played an important role in the
history of the city leaving outstanding account of subsequent sieges of Lvov by the armies
of Cossacks and Tatars
(1648),
Cossacks and Muscovites
(1655),
and
Siedmiogród
(1657).
Thanks to library searches in Lvov archives, it was possible to reconstruct the biography
of the previous professor of Cracow Academy, who at the turn of 1760-ties worked at
the Office of Crown Registers. Both then and earlier (e.g. when he worked as the Lvov
Official Receiver), Kuszewicz carefully conducted city affairs. For his services he achieved
particular degrees in city hierarchy, starting with writer and receiver, and concluding with
the position of counsellor and mayor.
The second sketch is devoted to a little known episode of Polish and Cossack battles
during winter and spring campaign
(1651)
of the Polish Crown Field-Hetman
Marcin
Kalinowski. Kalinowski s expedition (directed to
Podole
and regions of Braclaw and Kiev
336__________________________________________________________________________
voivodeships) was sabotage, and it ended up with a complete failure. During the fights with
Cossack and Tatar forces,
Hetman
lost several thousand soldiers, leading to the main camp
(at Sokal) merely six thousand haggard Poles.
Kamieniec
episode was apparently of key
importance for saving the remaining part of the Polish army, which facing considerably
bigger enemy forces hurriedly left
Podole
towards Wolyn. The very
Kamieniec
fortress
was attacked by combined Cossack and Tatar forces on May 9th,
1651.
The siege was
continued until May
1
lth (the time used by Kalinowski and his soldiers to cover the distance
of several dozen kilometres), afterwards the Cossacks under the leadership of
Hetman
Dernek
Lisowec, retreated towards
Bohdan
Chmielnicki s main army.
In the subsequent study, multiple consequences of the conquest of Lvov by the Swedes
in
1704
are discussed. The tragedy took place at the beginning of September when Charles
12th s army almost on the way reached into the weakly defended fortress. After plunging
the city, the foreign army imposed a huge tribute on this multi-ethnic centre. Preserved
diaries (e.g. by
Jan Tomasz Józefowicz
and Stefan Laskowski), registers of tribute and other
archives leave us with a statement that after those events the city of Lion lost its previous
importance, its economic decay progressing until the Austrian partition.
In the final section of the dissertation the figure of Udalryk
Krzysztof Radziwiłł
was
presented, together with his unique diary exposing struggles with hajdamaks (rebellious
peasants and Cossacks of the Ukraine) in
1749.
Apparently, the impoverished prince was
not particularly successful in dealing with the mobile hajdamak element .
Because of the fact that the subject matter of the work are the literary pieces of
forgotten or underestimated writers (known only by single researchers), the author decided
to introduce an extensive Annex. Its main objective is to familiarise the contemporary reader
with the output of baroque writers of mmonim gentium. Sometimes these are exclusively
anonymous accounts directly connected with a given study. Majority of them were analysed
on the basis of handwritten materials assuming that even if some interpretations of sources
(or topics) in the book are questioned or outdated, the present work will not lose its modern
cognitive value thanks to that annexed material.
