adam_text | The web s role as a new technology is currently beginning to disappear. Ten years ago,
the web
-
as any new (media) technology
-
came with a diverse set of
utopias
attached.
An important expression of the Utopian potential was found in the vocabulary used to
describe the new. The specific subset of this vocabulary analysed in this study are the
user types. As metaphoric descriptions of idealised forms of Internet users, user types
state what being online is
-
and what it should be. Analysed in detail are the
cyberflaneur, cyberflaneuse, webgrrl, cyberpunk, netizen, cybernaut and surfer. All of
them taken together express what cyberspace could (have) become.
As a virtual archaeology, this study concentrates on a readily found vocabulary. The
theoretical-methodological framework for the analysis consists of metaphor theory
(especially in terms of metaphors in the context of computers and cyberspace),
cybercultural studies and cyberfeminism. Most importantly, it concentrates on Walter
Benjamin, his Arcades Project and the flaneur figure. Reconstructing the transformation
of a technology from the technical into recognisable social and cultural identities, this
study analyses the cultural construction of an emerging medium at a particular moment
in time. It thereby provides a critical intervention at a point when the vocabulary is
threatening to become ubiquitous and thus to lose its Utopian potential.
