What are the causes of the wealth and poverty of nations? This book
compares the East and West German economies from
particular the period from
economy fell behind the West German level in terms of per capita
income
prosperous and high productive East German economy lose track
of West Germany? How much did East Germany fall behind the west?
What were the causes?
From
with different economic systems: East Germany was a centrally planned
economy and West Germany was a market economy. Obviously the
influence of institutions on economic performance is a major theme in the
comparison of the East and West German economies. Besides the effects
of institutional differences the falling behind is also related to the historical

dismantling, reparations, migration, and the disintegration of Germany.
Finally the historical events between
Berlin Wall, East Germany s transformation to a market economy and the
integration of the East and West German markets, contributed to the
East German falling behind.
This book focuses on the production side of the economy and compares
the growth and the relative levels of value added and labour productivity of
the East German and West German economies in a long-term perspective.
It presents new time series for the total economy, as well as for underlying
sectors and manufacturing branches. Moreover, the book presents
detailed accounts of the relative level of labour productivity in the industrial
