SUMMARY
Jews in
Osijek
(1918
-194í)
As members of the second or third generation of Jews who moved into
Slavonia,
Sirmium and south Hungary
(Baranja)
in the 18th century, the Ashkinazi Jews in
Osijek,
bearing German names and speaking Yiddish, became fully integrated in the
Osijek
milieu in the period between the two world wars
(1918 - 1941).
It is why they considered
Osijek
to be their home and accepted a great part of tradition of the environment they
lived in. One part of the Jewish community used to pursue their traditional occupations,
those of tradesmen and craftsmen. However, the beginning of the 20th century saw a
growing number of doctors, lawyers, industrialists (especially in the foodstuffs industry),
pharmacologists, professors, teachers, architects, musicians and other professionals of
Jewish descent. Jewish families with trade and craft businesses as well as the families of
intellectuals, both the members of the middle and lower social class, spoke for centuries
not only Croatian, which partly used to be their mother tongue, but also German (so
called Esseker language), Hungarian and other languages, depending on where those
new
Osijek
families had come from for business or other reasons. Therefore, the linguistic
assimilation that gained new momentum in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes,
i.e. the former Yugoslavia (neither German nor Hungarian were official languages), did not
leave any deeper marks onto the multinational environment such as
Osijek.
Quite on the
contrary, the role of Jews in the history of
Osijek
strengthened in chorus with opportunities
presented to them in the multinational environment in which they lived. Deeply rooted
into economical, cultural and social life of the town in the period between the two world
wars as well as earlier periods, they made a great contribution to the overall life of
Osijek.
Osijek
jews, with full citizenship and property rights, have undoubtedly exerted
a considerable influence on the development of
Osijek
economy as well as the total
economy of the wider area. Retailers and wholesalers, craftsmen, industrialists and bankers,
although a minority among the
Osijek
Jews, have left a significant mark on the Jewish
community of
Osijek
both in terms of economy and socially. Their share in trade was huge;
they had good commercial and financial connections with people from all over Europe.
Thanks to the Jewish community, variety of craft products and services in
Osijek
between
the wars became substantially larger. They were mainly engaged in business activities that

the town was deficient in. They introduced many latest technical trends and established
watchmaker, goldsmith and jeweler shops. As for the industrial production, the largest
number of the Jews was in the foodstuffs industry. In the period between the two world
wars it was the Jews who had a substantial ownership share in existing banking and savings
institutions, which were generally stock companies. Since they were quite skilled in complex
bank transactions they were employed mostly as clerks and creditors. Approximately one
third of all
Osijek
intellectuals (doctors, lawyers, professors, teachers, engineers, artists, etc.)
were of Jewish descent. The majority of them were lawyers and doctors, professions often
referred to as typically Jewish until the
1920s.
Their number gradually decreased since
members of other ethnic groups
-
in particular Croats
-
became lawyers and doctors
too. Still, the majority of Jews in
Osijek
were small craftsmen, clerks on lower positions,
workers in printing and textile industry, farmers, laborers, servants, etc, mainly members of
the middle class. And there were those who belonged to a lower social class, those who
lived a very modest civilian life. They collected waste materials, raw leather; worked as glass
merchants, transport workers, etc.
Since religious communities constitute a basic form of organization of Jews, it was there
that Jews used to gather. Within such communities they prayed in synagogues, ensured
religious education and celebration of holidays. Also, the so called social communities took
care of their members, in particular the neediest ones: the poor, widows, orphans, the
sick, refugees and others. Community membership was obligatory and all Jews belonged
to a community in the area in which they lived or owned or rented real estate, owned a
craft workshop, a store or a company. They resided in all parts of the town, although the
majority lived in the Upper Town. Due to the distance between the Upper and Lower
town
Osijek
they had two religious communities, two synagogues and two cemeteries.
Religious communities gathered their members on the occasion of important community
and other anniversaries as well as services of commemoration.
Through their professional work and other obligations Jews in
Osijek
were strongly
integrated in the life of the city and maintained good contacts with their fellow citizens of
other nationalities. In their spare time, however, they preferred to socialize with members
of their own community from all parts of the town. Therefore, considering the number of
Jews in their religious communities, all their societies (Girls Zionist society, Jewish youth
society Kavaret , Jewish national society
(Meo),
Jewish women s societies, Youth holiday
association colony, Association of Zionist women
(Wizo),
Burial society Hevra Kaddisha,
162
I Židovi u Osijeku

Jewish sports and gymnastics society Maccabi and others), had quite many members. A
great number of
Osijek
Jews participated in the work of more than just one society, which
was additional evidence of a rich social life.
Osijek
Jewish circles organized many musical
activities; frequent visits of leading Jewish musicians have been documented as well as visits
of many foreign musical groups, arousing great interest in the whole town and even among
non-Jewish population.
Strong economic and social life of the Jewish community in
Osijek
was terminated on
the eve of
1941.
It was the year during which
-
in many European countries and worldwide
-
many people, regardless of their ethnic and national origin, suffered terrible misfortunes.
Still, the destiny of all Jews, including those of
Osijek,
was additionally marked by an
appalling massacre commonly known as the holocaust.
