LORD ALFRED DOUGLAS
remarked that his life had been as fantastic and
melodramatic as any novel by Balzac , yet Douglas
or Bosie as he was called from childhood
remembered for his relationship with the playwright
and author Oscar Wilde.
The two met in
and an undergraduate of Magdalen College, Oxford.
Wilde, who could resist everything except temptation,
fell for the budding poet immediately. Douglas fully
reciprocated Wilde s affection, but his father, the
Marquess of Queensberry, although far from being a
paragon of virtue himself, objected to their relationship
on moral grounds. Wilde, then at the height of his fame,
sued the nobleman for criminal libel in
lost the case, was arrested the same day and after a
couple of sensational trials was sentenced to two years
hard labour for homosexual practices. The scandal
destroyed him and ruined Bosie s life as well.
Bosie s story is indeed a gripping one, a Greek
tragedy with elements of soap opera. The shadow of
Wilde broods over it all, and new evidence of Bosie s
devotion to him, while not making the artist s downfall
any less catastrophic, certainly serves to make it less
squalid and far more romantic.
Caspar Wintermans s insightful and absorbing
biography, which has appeared in several languages
and been turned into an award-winning documentary,
Two Loves, is followed by a fully annotated selection
of Bosie s verse. He was a considerable poet, but his
work has always been overshadowed by his
involvement in the Wilde affair. His verse, meticu¬
lously crafted, did not appeal to the post-war
generation, but the time is ripe for a rediscovery of his
work. For the first time one may enjoy between the
covers of one book lyrics that span all phases of Bosie s
life, including his decadent verse, chief among which
is Two Loves containing the famous line I am the
Love that dare not speak its name , as well as the
sonnets written to his wife, Olive Custance, with whom
he eloped in
Beauty and the Hunter and House of Bread , one of
the finest Christmas poems ever written. These are
well overdue for reappraisal, and this book gives
readers an opportunity to appreciate the remarkable
talent of this remarkable man.
