The complex interrelationship between atmosphere, snow cover and Alpine
permafrost makes it difficult to quantify the relative roles of different processes in
determining ground thermal variations in the field. For a better understanding of
these processes, a numerical model was developed. This model combined a soil
module with the one-dimensional mass and energy balance model SNOWPACK.
A sensitivity study was performed on different fartors affecting ground surface
temperatures and BTS values, focusing on the important role of snow insulation
parameters and air temperatures. Boreholes were drilled in an avalanche slope at
Fliiela Pass,
uted by avalanches on ground temperatures and permafrost distribution. The first
three years data indicated a shallow permafrost body with temperatures close to
the melting-point at the base of the slope. The numerical model was applied to
this data to understand the role of regular snow avalanches on permafrost distribu¬
tion and to predict permafrost evolution under conditions of a changing climate.
