Cell activation by extracytoplasmic ligands is the
consequence of a highly regulated and dynamic series
of events involving the coordinated engagement of
activating and inhibitory cell surface receptors. The
dissection of natural killer (NK) cell receptor biology
has been instrumental in revealing the balance between
these contradictory forces. This volume covers recent
aspects of NK cell receptor biology, from ligand re¬
cognition up to the integration of multiple input signals
and the transfer into the initiation of lymphocyte
effector function.
The concept of extending missing self is also pre¬
sented, as well as the pleiotropic functions initiated upon
engagement of NKG2D with its ligands. Finally, the im¬
portance of the cross-talk between NK cells and other
immune partners, such as dendritic cells, is emphasized
along with the mode of recognition of cytomegalovirus-
infected cells and tumor cells by NK cells.
