adam_text | The main question behind this book is
whether, in the
creation, the existence of two jurisdictions
in Ireland has had an impact on language,
specifically on knowledge
and use
towards that language. The book shows
that the question cannot be answered by
a simple yes or no. Based on interviews
with Catholics and Protestants in Armagh
City and Monaghan Town, this book
shows that the the division of Ireland has
had an impact on social identity, which in
turn has affected attitudes towards
language and dialect use, and that the
divergence is the result of a combination
of different social factors resulting in
tendencies rather than categorical
differences. Divergence is demonstrated
through the results of an investigation into
knowledge
dialect words on each side of the border,
showing which types of words are still
used
Between social subgroups (categorised by
such factors as sex, age, socio-economic
status etc. as well as religion), there
emerge differences which are explained by
social identity theory, as are the influence
of and the inter-relationship between the
border and religious denomination when
it comes to language attitudes.
The book concludes that the most
important relationship is that of majority
and minority
underprivileged in Northern Ireland, some
Protestants in the Irish Republic also feel
disadvantaged. Self-reports by
respondents refer to shibboleths which
distinguish between Protestant and
Catholic speech and to their respective
fears of saying something too Catholic
or something too Protestant . Although it
has long been known that there are two
different states with their own regional
standards and education systems, the
relationship between the minority and the
majority which emerges from this book as
more important than the social variables
for individuals has never been so
rigorously or convincingly demonstrated.
The book is a genuine, major and original
contribution to knowledge. With scientific
rigour, it links cultural identity and
religious diversity with language in a way
never before demonstrated. It provides
objective confirmation of certain cultural
identity stereotypes, but it also shatters
others. If its great many statistical results
are carefully used, the book will contribute
constructively and refreshingly to all
ethnolinguistic and glotto-political debate
in Ireland.
