undertaken by a young English girl in order to get married. She sailed at the
height of the German U-boat menace in a British convoy. Five ships were sunk
by enemy action.
After the black-out in Britain, arriving in the colourful country of Burma was
thrilling. Her next two years in the Shan States were idyllic. But this idyll was
broken by the Japanese invasion of Burma, when she and her husband had to
flee for their lives to India. The book goes on to describe the period spent in India
and the eventual return to Burma, where more troubles were to take place, in
1947......
