| adam_text | The experience of women in the nineteenth century has generated a wealth of
groundbreaking research in recent decades. The Columbia Guide to American
Women in the Nineteenth Century presents the best scholarship in a concise, easy-
to-use volume. It combines overview articles, a chronological history, and
alphabetical entries on key events, movements, organizations, and individual figures
to provide an authoritative source of information and interpretation.
The authors emphasize the areas in which scholars have identified important
changes (such as suffrage and reform), topics in which researchers are now making
great strides (such as racial, ethnic, religious, and regional diversity), and innovative
and relatively recent explorations (for example, work on female friendships and
female sexuality). Subjects discussed include domestic life, the changing roles of
women in the workforce, immigration, religion, women s education, morality, and the
development of feminist and other social and political movements. The Columbia
Guide also includes a chapter on resources for further research, including general
historical works, biographies and autobiographies, journals, archives, Web sites,
novels, and films.
Catherine Clinton is the author of several books, including Fanny Kemble s Civil
Wars and Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom.
Christine Lunardini is the author of What Every American Should Know About
Women s History:
Equal Rights: Alice Paul and the National Woman s Party.
