Dr. Frank has unique qualifica¬
tions for writing a biography of
Einstein. Himself an eminent scien¬
tist, he has known Einstein long and
intimately, and his training as a
scientific writer enables him to make
Einstein's discoveries and formula¬
tions as understandable to the lay¬
man as they ever can be made.
Further, his familiarity with the
social and political background of
Einstein's life has provided him with
all that is necessary to present a
complete portrait of the man.
Einstein's name will be remem¬
bered as long as Newton's. With it
is inseparably associated what for
convenience is called his theory of
relativity. Einstein will also be
remembered, Dr. Frank suggests, as
the man who, in a letter in
1939
to
President Roosevelt, mentioned for
the first time on record the possibility
of an atomic bomb. The bomb was
made practicable by Einstein's own
formula for the amount of energy
equivalent to a given amount of
matter.
But it is with Einstein the human
being as well as with Einstein the
incomparable genius that Dr. Frank
is concerned in this intimate bio¬
graphy
