ic record of the Native peoples of North America. The
iconic Curtis images that are most I rcquenily repro¬
duced lend
familiar to most people are his many portraits and land¬
scapes featuring Native American women—remarkably,
this new collection is the first to focus exclusively on his
female portraits.
Behind each of these photographs lies a greater story
of a world in transition. Few Native people still lived the
traditional ways of
them and recorded their
Americans lived on reservations, attended government
schools, and no longer wore traditional dress. Curtis
went to great lengths to find isolated groups of people
who were still living relatively traditional lives. Thus, his
photographs have proved to be invaluable historical doc¬
uments. Indeed, some Native Americans today still carry
on the traditions of their ancestors based on the potten.

nominated film about Curtis, has tracked down
descendants of his subjects and even two women who
themselves were photographed by him. She shares the
pictures with them, eliciting powerful memories and
