Zusammenfassung: | Within a year of American independence, an American merchant ship was captured by state-sponsored pirates operating out of the ports of Morocco. Algerian pirates quickly seized two more ships: the boats were confiscated, their crews held captive, and ransom demanded of the fledgling American government. The history of America's conflict with the piratical states of the Mediterranean runs through the first four presidencies; the adoption of the Constitution; the Quasi-War with France and the War of 1812; the construction of a full-time professional navy; and, most important, the nation's halting steps toward commercial independence. Depicting a time when Britain ruled the seas and France most of Europe, this book shows that America's earliest conflict with the Arabic world was always a struggle for economic advantage rather than any clash of cultures or religions.--From publisher description Includes information on the Algerine War (1815), Algiers Treaty (1795), Continental Congress, U.S. Congress, Stephen Decatur, Democratic-Republicans, William Eaton, Federalists, France, Benjamin Franklin, free trade, Great Britain, U.S. House of Representatives, Ali Hassan (dey of Algiers), Islam, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, Yusuf Karamanli (bashaw of Tripoli), Koran, Tobias Lear, James Madison, mercantilism, Morocco Treaty, Navigation Acts, U.S. Navy, Netherlands, Richard O'Brien, Treaty of Paris, pirates, piracy, Portugal, Edward Preble, Sallee Rovers, U.S. Senate, slaves, slavery, Spain, Sweden, Tripoli, Tripoli Treaty, Tunis, war on terrorism, War of 1812, George Washington, etc |

spelling | Lambert, Frank Verfasser aut The Barbary wars American independence in the Atlantic world Frank Lambert 1. ed. New York Hill and Wang 2005 228 S. Ill., Kt. txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references The American Revolution checked -- Tribute or arms? -- Tributary to the Barbary States -- The cultural construction of the Barbary pirates -- The Tripolitan War: 1801-1805 -- An uneasy peace : partisan debate and British harassment -- The Algerine war of 1815 and American independence in the Atlantic world. Within a year of American independence, an American merchant ship was captured by state-sponsored pirates operating out of the ports of Morocco. Senate, slaves, slavery, Spain, Sweden, Tripoli, Tripoli Treaty, Tunis, war on terrorism, War of 1812, George Washington, etc Geschichte 1784-1816 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1815-1816 gnd rswk-swf Diplomatieke betrekkingen gtt Oorlogen gtt Politieke onafhankelijkheid gtt Zeerovers gtt aPirates zAfrica, North xHistory y19th century aPirates zMediterranean Region xHistory y19th century Militärpolitik (DE-588)4065004-2 gnd rswk-swf Amerikanisch-tripolitanischer Krieg (DE-588)4368425-7 gnd rswk-swf Politische Auseinandersetzung (DE-588)4215794-8 gnd rswk-swf aUnited States xHistory yTripolitan War, 1801-1805 aUnited States xRelations zAfrica, North aAfrica, North xRelations zUnited States aUnited States xHistory yWar with Algeria, 1815 aUnited States xForeign relations y1783-1815 aAfrica, North xHistory, Naval y19th century aMediterranean Region xHistory, Naval y19th century Algerien (DE-588)4001179-3 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Nordafrika (DE-588)4042482-0 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Politische Auseinandersetzung (DE-588)4215794-8 s Nordafrika (DE-588)4042482-0 g Geschichte 1784-1816 z DE-604 Amerikanisch-tripolitanischer Krieg (DE-588)4368425-7 s Militärpolitik (DE-588)4065004-2 s Algerien (DE-588)4001179-3 g Geschichte 1815-1816 z http://www.loc.gov/catdir/toc/ecip0421/2004019361.html Table of contents HBZ Datenaustausch application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=013340011&sequence=000004&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
