The Splendor of Ruins in French Landscape Painting,
explores various interpretations of the architectural ruin as envisaged by French painters
of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This catalogue accompanies the exhibition
organized by Stephen D. Borys, curator at the Allen Memorial Art Museum (AMAM),
Oberlin College, and presented at the AMAM and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
The exhibition, featuring thirty-six pictures by eighteen artists, was supported by impor¬
tant loans from twenty-four American and Canadian museums.
The beautifully illustrated catalogue examines the ruin as an enduring and evolving
artistic and cultural resource, charting its representation and development over the course
of almost two centuries of French painting. It spans the careers of Claude
the
mously influenced the development of the architectural landscape. In many ways these
two artists anchor the discourse on the ruin in French art. While the ruin was depicted
before and after them, within their lifetimes it flourished in landscape painting.
In the seventeenth century, Claude
in appropriating the ruin for their landscapes. In the following generations, artists experi¬
mented and reveled in the structural and symbolic complexities of these classical monu¬
ments. A century after Claude s pastoral landscapes, Robert brought the ruin to new
levels of aesthetics and historicism in his magnificent paintings, which venerated the tri¬
umphs of classical, medieval, and contemporary architecture. Represented in this fasci¬
nating study are several of the painters who came to define the art of the landscape in the
ancien régime,
Hyre, the Patel family,
Joseph Vernet, and Hubert Robert.
Over the course of this period in French painting, the portrayal of the ruin experienced
a complete cycle of intellectual and physical transformation, and much of what we under¬
stand about these ancient monuments is determined by the way they were documented
and presented to us as viewers. For artists and patrons, these impressive structures evoked
the triumphs and mystery of ancient worlds, the glories of mythology and biblical narra¬
tives, and archaeological discoveries, as well as the familiar images of the Grand Tour.
Rome and its environs were clearly favored as the destination to experience and study the
ruin, but artists traveled to other parts of Europe and the Middle East to find inspiration
and sources for their paintings.
In the works discussed in the catalogue, the ruin is shown in varied forms and styles,
its presence sometimes subdued and at other times as the highlight of the composition. It
is defined by architectural orders and artistic caprice, but rarely is it limited by the sources
and motifs that inspired its creation in the painting. Ruins point to the past, but as a phys¬
ical entity they are part of the present; and in landscape painting, they have the distinction
of belonging to the man-made as well as the organic fabric of the landscape, and artists
have treated them as both.
