Acknowledged in the British Film Institute s millennium poll as one of the top twenty
movies made in Britain, Brighton Rock is a milestone film. It made Richard Attenborough
a star, gave us the first realistic depiction of the British criminal underworld and is the first
of Graham Greene s adaptations of his own work. It might also be considered the
godfather of classic crime films like Get Carter and The Long Good Friday.
To mark the centenary of Greene s birth in
1904,
Steve Chibnall presents a detailed study
of the film of Greene s famous novel, an authentic slice of English seaside
noir. As
well as
offering a scene-by-scene analysis. Chibnall considers the writing, production and reception
of the film, and the real activities of the racecourse gangs and protection racketeers that
inspired the drama. Drawing on unpublished sources, he uncovers the mystery of missing
scenes that, if restored, would give Brighton Rock a significantly different emphasis, and
he reveals new information about the film s controversial ending.
Chibnall s book is essential reading for anyone interested in literary adaptation, crime on
screen, and British film-making in its golden period.
