north America. It is endangered since there are fewer than a couple
hundred speakers principally in communities in Ontario, Canada and
Wisconsin in the United States. Like other Iroquoian languages, Oneida is
noteworthy for: its phonology with a sparse inventory of phonemes but
complex morphophonemics; its complex polysynthetic morphology which
contains noun incorporation; a limited inventory of parts of speech
nouns, verbs, and particles where verbs by far predominate; and a loose
sentence structure where words contain enough material to function more
like clauses. Unlike other languages in the family, Oneida is noteworthy for
its use of whispering. The current work features a structuralist account of
the phonology and morphology, a limited discussion of syntax, and a
functionalist summary of the resources that the language has expressing
several universal categories. The work is based on twenty five years of
fieldwork among Oneida speakers in Wisconsin from which the author has
produced a dictionary, several text collections, and a number of articles.
