FILLED THE VOID LEFT IN THE
AMERICAN PSYCHE.
Tracing developments in the genre, Johnson-Smith argues that such series
not only raise complex questions about identity, race, ideology and morality,
but also continue a long tradition, both of science fiction literature with its
'alienating' language and also of the notion of the sublime, so deeply
embedded in the American consciousness through the country's landscapes
and their depictions. Drawing on Caldwell's notion of 'televisuality', she
refutes the idea that narrative must be delivered through language and
character alone, arguing instead that sfx and cgi technology has made it
possible to render whole new worlds in such a way that the so-called
background can indeed foreground a story.
With in-depth analysis of key series, she shows too how boutique television
allows for intricate relationships between series and viewers and, particularly
in the overarching epic narrative of Babylon
5,
how science fiction can
subvert standard television formats.
American Science Fiction TV is a must for both SF fans and scholars,
as well as anyone interested in developments in television and the ways
¡n which it can both create and reflect national mythologies.
