the chemisfs viewpoint in its comprehensive overview of methods for
chemical synthesis of inorganic materials.
The second chapter now includes a section on biomorphic ceramics,
while one on
LEDs
has been added to Chapter
3.
Chapter
4
now includes
a more thorough explanation of
borate
glasses, with certain sections
being completely rearranged. In addition, Chapter

has been exten¬
sively revised, and a whole new sub-chapter added on coordination
polymers and Chapter
7
has been completely re-written.
The general principles and requirements are discussed for each
method given, along with selected examples of technically applied
materials, as well as the material properties and applications of the
resulting products. Furthermore, numerous tables with further exam¬
ples help in assessing the scope and limitation of the various methods
and in choosing a suitable synthesis for any given problem.
Intended for both courses in inorganic chemistry and materials
science, this volume is equally valuable for all researchers working on
the borderline of these two disciplines.
Ulrich
Schubert is Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the
Institute of Materials Chemistry, Vienna University of Technol¬
ogy. Born in
Regensburg,
he completed all his studies at the
Technical University of Munich, including his thesis under the
supervision ofE. O. Fischer. He was a post-doctoral fellow at
Starford
University, where he worked with W.S.Johnson. After
gaining his lecturing qualification in Munich, he held a profes¬
sorship of inorganic chemistry at the University
qfWürzburg
from
1982
to
1994
before moving to Vienna to become a fall
professor. From
1989
to
1994
he also served in different positions
at the
Fraunhofer
Institute of Silicate Research in
Würzburg.
Professor Schubert s research interests include application-
oriented fundamental research on sol-gel processes and the
activation of silicon-element bonds by transition metal
complexes.
Nicola Husingis Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of
Ulm,
Germany. Bom in
Rheda-Wiedenbriick, she studied chemistry at the University of
Würzburg.
During her dissertation
she began working at Vienna University ofTechnology and the University ofCalifomia, Los Angeles.
After receiving her PhD in
1997
from the University
qfWürzburg,
she was awarded a post-doctoral
fellowship with C.J. Brinker on nanostructured thin films the following year. Returning to Vienna
she gained her lecturing qualification in
2003
and became full professor at the University of
Ulm
in
2004.
Her research interests focus on the synthesis of sol-gel based porous materials and
mesoscopicaliy organized systems, especially with respect to synthesis
-
structure
-
property
relations.
