SUMMARY
The study provides a detailed description of
250
medieval monasteries that re¬
present the national cultural heritage of Serbia. The monasteries Studenlca and So-
pocanl have been included in the „Official list of cultural treasures of the world's he¬
ritage
„.
These cultural monuments date
1.100
to
500
years back. They represent a
living proof of the presence of Serbs in these regions and testifies that the Serb pe¬
ople had very early become a historic and civilized nations. The ¡lustrations take up
less then one third of the main text. Both foreign and domestic experts agree that
the paintings drawn in the monastery of Sopocani, almost
800
years old represents
the most beautiful frescoes of Europe in the 13th century. By the time the time the
constructions of some of the monumental monasteries had been completed, buil¬
ding of many famous
Europen
catedrais
was not even begun. The medieval Serb
state reached its economic and cultural peak during the region of tzar Stefan
Uros
IV
Dušan (Í331
- 1355.).
He had conquered almost the entire Byzantine Empire
and considered himself its legitimate heir. Unfortunately, the invasion of Europe by
the Turks for whom the Serbs stood as the last live rampart, managed to stifle furt¬
her lourishing of the State. The study also contains a descriptions of the necessary
scientific methods that were applied and includes full bibliography of professional
books, magazines and the encyclopedias consulted. It provides the explanations of
the tecnical terms used, a summary with a table as well as the most important maps
and drawings of architectural layouts. Interesting supplements on Serb spiritual le¬
aders from the early 13th century to date are also included. Mojor patrons and ru¬
les are listed. The symbols found on medieval Serb coat of arms and flags are de¬
scribed. The most famous types of crosses, the universal planetary symbol, are de¬
scribed. The Serbs are fully entitled to be proud of their cultural heritage parts of
which are over one thousand years old. But they should also discover it, at least the
extent provided in this study.
