AROUND THE PROBLEM OF HOMELESSNESS.
A STUDY ON THE SOCIAL ISOLATION
OF THE HOMELESS
Summary
This book is about
anomie,
social exclusion and social inclusion of a marginal group such
as homeless people. Some parts of the book say about poverty, and why poverty is passed on
from one generation to another. The book explains lifestyles of the homeless. It shows home-
lessness as a social problem, crisis, which usually appears during the period of economic and
political transformation.
The book contains definitions of homelessness as a symptom of social adaptation, and
shows one view of homelessness as a dramatic life of many people. The dissertation shows,
what other people think about homeless, and how they create the horrible stereotypes. The
book is about the stereotype of homeless people from the point of view of the inhabitants of
Poznań.
The book presents the results of the empirical research. In this research there were more
than two hundred interviews with homeless people. It was very difficult because those people
can t stand talking about their hard life. Each of the interviews contained

questions about
life, work, family, violence in the family, child abuse etc.
In the book the biography method was used as well as life story method and life history
method. A lot of documents, found in social institutions were analyzed. The book adapts some
sociological theories for example such as
anomie
theory, culture of poverty, role theory, label¬
ling theory, and other. It analyzed what kind of adaptation there can be in the life of homeless
people.
The book summarises the causes of poverty and homelessness, and identifies the popula¬
tion groups which have the lowest income level. The result of living in poverty, without home,
without relatives, outside of society in the underclass is described. The book is about culture
of poverty . The book concludes that the poor are poor and homeless, because they have a
distinct culture of
Ufe
style. The poverty and homelessness depend on the family conditions.
Most people have more or less the same social status as their parents had. It is possible because
there has never been a tradition of higher education and honest work in their family. The book
explains, why the crisis of homelessness is not only about the lack of services, housing, and
jobs but also a result of the mental problems when the poor often become homeless through
resistance to the discipline of the workplace, authoritarian families, and the bureaucratic social
welfare system.
