Sul versante pagano, Olimpiodoro di
Tebe
costituisce la più autorevole testimo¬
nianza su un periodo particolarmente difficile della tarda antichità, e cioè la prima
metà del
V
secolo d. C, che in Occidente vide il primo sacco di Roma ad opera di
barbari. L autorevolezza di Olimpiodoro è stata da gran tempo e da più parti rico¬
nosciuta; come pure è stato riconosciuto l avere egli condizionato, almeno nelle
informazioni, buona parte della posteriore storiografia, sicché è particolarmente
deprecabile il fatto che non se ne possieda l originale. Ed ancora, l opera di
Olimpiodoro di
Tebe
era scritta in greco per un pubblico greco quasi contempora¬
neo ai fatti, ed aveva per campo soltanto l Occidente. Da qui, le istanze che muo¬
vono queste Ricerche di tarda storiografia: definire la caratura del personaggio,
esporre le peculiarità dei modi della sua trasmissione (la recensione del patriarca
Fozio), ed infine suggerirne le fonti di informazione,
o i
canali delle conoscenze di
vicende di una zona tendenzialmente sempre più separata dalla
pars
Orientis,
come appunto quella occidentale.
