In recent years, children s literature has been headline news. Whether it is
J. K. Rowling s phenomenal sales, Philip Pullman s challenges to authority, or
Melvin Burgess s determination to engage with the realities of adolescence, the
books currently being created for children are demanding increasing public and
critical attention. The media spotlight on present developments in publishing for
children and young people has highlighted not only the quality and diversity of
children s literature, but also its importance in today s culture.
Based on the award-winning National Centre for Research in Children s
Literature s long-running course, this attractively illustrated collection of essays is
ideal both as a general introduction to the subject and as a textbook for students.
The experienced team of authors traces developments overtime and across
genres, looking at key British, North American and Australian works, as well as
some in translation, from picture books and texts for younger readers through to
graphic novels, multimedia texts and young adult fiction. Together, the chapters
apply and explore a wide range of critical approaches, supported by explanatory
boxed material and suggestions for further reading, making this the essential
guide to a fast-growing and popular area of writing.
Kimberley Reynolds is Professor of Children s Literature at the University of
Newcastle upon Tyne. She was previously Professor of Children s Literature at the
University of Surrey, Roehampton, where she founded the National Centre for
Research in Children s Literature.
