The physical history of the Earth is increasingly well documented and recent discoveries of living organisms occupying extreme environments have established and widened our understanding of the physical limits for life here. Furthermore, rapid human-induced environmental change of a global nature is a widely acknowledged phenomenon. The time is hence ripe for a synthetic description of the physical factors that act as drivers of evolution and organismal diversity This discussion is particularly relevant both to the search for earthly life in what are seen as extreme environments, in the present dav, distant past and foreseeable future - and the search for life on other bodies such as Europa and Mars. Thus, the time is right to examine the role of the physical environment in shaping evolution. The editors of this exciting book have invited top researchers to assess kev events in evolution, from the origin of life to human evolution and the potential for life to evolve elsewhere and view these events in the light of the influence of the physical environment. The results are surprising and the reader is quickly left with the view that the physical environment has profoundly moulded events from basic evolution to extinctions and even to the rise of human culture. |
