Literary Theory mtd CnScismr. Art Oxford Guide is unique in its comprehensive coverage.
ConsisËng
evataaiom, and historical contextualization of the theory and practice of literary criticism.
Eaeb ©f fie individual essays seeks to position modern criticism and theory within
a broader intellectual history, so that modern movements in criticism and individual
theorists are presented both on their own terms and as part of an ongoing conversation
with literary critical and aesthetic precursors as far back as Plato.
Part One examines thfe historical and philosophical foundations of key concepts in literary
criticism: representation, authorship, interpretation, and evaluation. Each essay addresses
one of these major cbftcepts through an earlier thinker or movement but approached
within a frame w,hich engages with current critical preoccupations. These essays set
up a dialogue between Ipast and present which is substantiated and filled out in the
essays that follow? Part Two covers the history of criticism in the twentieth century—
movements, writers, and critical concepts^up to the so-called theory revofcition in
the
William Empson, the New Criticism, the Frankfurt School, Freud and psychoanalysis,
the Russian debate on narrative, and the rise of cwHwal studies after Leavis. Part Three
consists of more extended essays which cover
literary theory including explication of individual theorists, intellectual and historical
contexts, applications, and evaluations. Areas covered include: structuralism, psycho¬
analysis after Freud, d econstructiorii, feminism, postcoloiaiafent, race and ethnicity,
histoificisifis, postmodernism,
four reflect upon the significance and impact of modem theory and suggest
