SUMMARY
This book has been published on the 50th aniversary of Belgrade Historical
Archives foundation. Its aim is to show the Archives growing and the activities during the
period of its existing.
The book consists of two big separate parts, devided in few segments. First part
has been devoted to Archives establishing and development, evolutive development
process of the Archive were detaliled analysed, its organisational and
personel
changes,
and it was pointed out that what was cruical and most important in its development. In the
second part there were elaborted the Archives activities through its basical functions.
Every of those function has been elaborated as separate part, there were included in de¬
tails the archivic works from archive materials protection on the terrain, documents ar¬
ranging and elaborating, research in the country and abroad, in order complete the
Archive funds and collections, its activities on cultural and promoting areas, and the most
complicated works in the Archives voluminous publishing activities.
Historical Archives of Belgrade was established in
1945
although the ideas of
its establishing existed much earlier. Its foundation fell at the time when Belgrade, after

year war, due to bombing, destroyed factories and other industrial and cultural facilities
showed „a chaotic picture or ruin . At the time of general reconstruction the integrated
cultural renovation with great enthusiashm also started. Sharing the destiny of its country
and similar institutions, the first archivist-entusiasts, pioneers in their works had been
permanently expanding and enriching their works and Archives funds, in order to collect
and to provide as many as possible the written sources on the past of our town.
The main task of the Archives since its foundation on

sisted in systematical collecting of archive documents for history of Belgrade, expert and
scientific research, constant protection and putting documents at the disposal to the users.
Of small office with limited possibilities due to unproper premises, the
Archives grew up in developed, modern cultural institution, for what the important thing
was the construction of modern building, built for fullfill its specific needs, in which the
Archive moved in
1973,
and it is still situated there today. Archives activities are perma¬
nently directed at better realisation of those activities that contribute to keeping and us¬
ing, and studying of Belgrade history, the huge cultural treasure laying in Archive depots,
and those activities as well which contribute to bigger professional affirmation of the
Archives.
Documents being
keept
with the Archive funds and collections which include
the time periods from middle of
XVIII
century till today concern Belgrade teritory and re¬
gion.
For better carrying out of tasks relied to it, the Archive is organised in

Administrative section.
Besides affairs from the scope of basical functions such as the affairs of
archive materials protection and using, the Archives fit into cultural, scientific and eco¬
nomic processes of the country.
Developing of the Archives itselfs was supported by cooperation with many
social and economic institutions of the town. During its existing the Archives developed
and promoted the cooperation with towns from other Republics of ex Yugoslavia, as well
as with many specialistic and scientific institutions in the country and abroad.
With its cultural

educational and publishing activities, the Archives per-
formes today very important cultural mission in life of Belgrade, and it also have great
ambitions for future development
