of the work of Ulales s leading literary
critic, PI. Ulynn Thomas, with contributions
from internationally acclaimed writers^
and poets, aFwell as significant critics
working in the field. The contributors not
only pay homage to III. Ulynn Thomas s
writings, but also deuelop and expand on
discussions initiated in his critical works.
Looking initially at the relationships i
between the English- and Welsh-language
literatures of Wales, the uolume proceeds to
explore the interactions of nationhood and
gender from the late nineteenth century to
rthe present day, the politics of translation
in Wales as compared with those of M
Ireland and America, and the intriguing
connections between Welsh literature ana
flmerican, flfrican-flmerican, Irish and
Jewish^ literary traditions, flmongst the
writers discussed from comparatiue j||
perspectives are Rate Roberts and ■
margiad Euans, Ralph Ellison and Emlyn.
Williams, and Derek Walcott and Dylaj|l
Thomas. Each section begins with a an
specially written poem by a leading Welsh
writer (Emyr Humphreys, Gillian Clarke,
Tony Conran, Illenna Elfyn and Grahame
Dauies] and the uolume ends with a
contribution from the nobel Laureate
