| adam_text | From the finest archaeological collections of Tuscany come
these remarkable treasures from the world of the ancient
Etruscans, who have been long overshadowed by the more
familiar Greeks and Romans. The rich legacy of this
intriguing and talented people is represented by a wide
range of objects. These include impressive sculpture and
architectural ornaments, superb bronzes, cremation urns
and sarcophagi bearing striking portraits of the dead, as
well as intricate goldwork, decorative ceramics, and exotic
items made from imported materials such as ivory and
amber. These reveal the cultured lifestyle of a wealthy and
sophisticated society.
The Etruscans were a pre-Roman people who occupied an
area of central Italy between present-day Florence and Rome.
Their civilization lasted more than
in the Villanovan Iron Age of the 10th century bc to its
integration within the Roman world in the

distinctive language, customs and social structure. Wealthy
Etruscans enjoyed an enviable lifestyle in which banqueting
and sports played an important part. The remains of
Etruscan culture have mainly survived ia their necropolises,
or cities of the dead, where the tombs and their contents
provide eloquent evidence of the skill of their craft workers,
traders, sailors, agriculturalists, builders and engineers. The
Etruscans were part of an extensive international trade
network that spanned the Mediterranean, the Near East and
parts of central Europe. This book documents the influence
of other contemporary civilizations on the Etruscans, and
especially the role of the Romans, who absorbed many
aspects of Etruscan culture but were ultimately responsible
for its end. This is a book about the people of Etruria,
their society, craft, art and beliefs.
