YUGOSLAVS, THE
AUSTRO
-HUNGARIAN ARMY,
AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR

This study focuses on the behavior of Yugoslav
soldiers in the ranks of the
Aus
tro
»Hungarian Army during
the First World War and seeks to determine the role they
played in the
Habsburg
Empire s success and failure on
the battlefield, and the final collapse of both army and
empire. Central to this question is the relationship
between the various Yugoslav nationalities and the dif¬
fering national ideas which influenced their loyalty to
the Habsburgs.
Primary research was conducted at the
Kriegsarchiv
in Vienna where pertinent Austro-Hungarian military docu¬
ments were examined. Additional research was undertaken
at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. where the
contemporary observations of American diplomatic personnel
were consulted. These primary sources were supplemented
by an extensive survey of relevant Austrian, Yugoslav,
German, Italian, and British books and articles, including
the memoirs of numerous soldiers and statesmen, national

histories,
and official military histories. Although
these sources were often conflicting, every effort was
made to create an objective study free of the national
or political biases which permeate the issues involved.
The study finds that the behavior of Austria-Hungary s
Yugoslav troops varied greatly between national groups
and the particular front on which they were engaged.
Generally, the Roman Catholic Croat and Slovene troops,
and the Bosnian Moslems, demonstrated greater steadfast¬
ness than the Orthodox Serbs, among whom anti-Habsburg
sentiment was the most widespread. A strong antipathy
existed between Croats and Serbs which contribute to the
bitter and often brutal character of Austria-Fwigary s
unsuccessful invasions of Serbia in the autumn of
1914.
On the Italian Front a strong resentment of Italy s cul¬
tural and territorial pretensions in the Adriatic region
stimulated most Yugoslav troops to fight with unsurpassed
determination. On the Eastern Front, however, the lack
of any deep hostility, and in some instances actual sym¬
pathy, toward the Russians led to a constant stream of
desertion, and occasional mass surrenders, especially by
Serbs
.
The attitudes of Yugoslav soldiers was affected by
poor leadership, inadequate rations, and the Russian

Revolution,
which many witnessed as prisoners-of-war.
Conditions on the home front, where special military
administrations ruled with an increasingly heavy hand,
also contributed to a decline in morale. By early
1918,
desertion among Yugoslav soldiers had reached epidemic
proportions, many deserters forming armed bands ( Green
Cadres ) who combined nationalist and revolutionary goals
with the more traditional occupation of banditry.
The failure of the Imperial regime to adequately
redress the general Yugoslav desire for political reform
led to a gradual, and among most Croats and Slovenes, a
reluctant, turn to separatism. The Croats in particular,
however, never reconciled themselves to the idea of an
independent Yugoslav state in which they would be domi¬
nated by the Serbs, a problem which plagues Yugoslavia
to this day.
