Protection
of the soil, as both a habitat and one of the basics of life, is an important
issue for environmental politics. In Germany the
1998
issue of a Bundes-Bodenschutz-
gesetz has provided a legal framework, which other nations are now moving to adopt.
As well as physical, chemical and microbiological parameters, the study of annelid
worms (Annelida) is an integral part of current research concepts. Of particular
significance are not only the rainworms (Lumbricidae), but also the Enchytraeidae. In
temperate climate zones representatives of the genus Fridericia play a major role, but
their application has been restricted by the need for
taxonomic
revision. This serious
gap in our knowledge is filled by the present work. All previous literature has been
considered and this is supplemented by a wide-ranging study of the author s collections
in the field, the examination of type material and combined investigations using light-
microscopy and protein electrophoresis. In addition to structural and protein
electrophoretic characters, data on habitat and distribution are also included. Together,
this has provided a basis for the unequivocal separation of the

valid species,

of
which are described here as new. A straightforward key and precise descriptions, together
with numerous illustrations, allow reliable identification of both species groups and
species.
Längst gehört der Schutz des Bodens als Lebensgrundlage und Lebensraum zum
Handlungsfeld der Umweltpolitik. In Deutschland hat dieser Bereich mit der Verab¬
schiedung des Bundes-Bodenschutzgesetzes (1998) eine Grundlage erhalten, an der
sich inzwischen auch andere Nationen orientieren. Neben physikalischen, chemischen
und mikrobiologischen Parametern ist speziell der Einbezug der Ringelwürmer
(Annelida)
integraler Bestandteil gegenwärtiger Untersuchungskonzepte. Von maßgeblicher Be¬
deutung sind hier, neben den Regenwürmern (Lumbricidae), die Enchytraeiden. In den
gemäßigten Klimazonen spielen hierbei vor allem Vertreter der Gattung Fridericia eine
große Rolle. Die Anwendung in der Praxis war jedoch wegen der Revisionsbedürftigkeit
dieser Tiergruppe behindert. Diese gravierende Lücke wird durch die vorliegende Neu¬
bearbeitung behoben. Die jetzige Monographie berücksichtigt das gesamte bisherige
Schrifttum. Darüber hinaus fußt sie auf der breiten Basis von Freiland-Aufsammlungen
des Autors, der Überprüfung von Typenmaterial sowie der kombinierten Anwendung
von Lichtmikroskopie und Protein-Elektrophorese. Neben Strukturmerkmalen und
protein-elektrophoretischen Daten sind Angaben über
Habitat
und Verbreitung einbe¬
zogen. Damit ist die Grundlage für eine sichere Abgrenzung aller 89 gültigen Arten
geschaffen, von denen 10 hier als neu beschrieben sind. Eine klare Bestimmungs¬
tabelle und sorgfältige Beschreibungen ermöglichen in Verbindung mit zahlreichen Ab¬
bildungen die sichere Identifizierung der Artengruppen und Arten.
