LYNNE TILLMAN
For the narrator
oí
Motion Sickness, life is
an unguided tour. Adrift in Europe during
the
mid-1980s,
she improvises a life and a
self. Along the way, she encounters
people who, like herself, are displaced,
shaped by the history and culture of their
countries. In London, she s befriended by
an expatriate American Buddhist, Jessica,
whose mysterious English husband,
Charles, seems to be following her
wherever she goes
—
or so she thinks. In
Paris, she lives with
Ariette, an
art
historian who is obsessed with
Velazquez s painting
Las Meninas.
In
Amsterdam, she teams up with a Belgian
friend,
Sylvie,
who is studying
prostitutes; she tours Italy with two
English brothers, as different as chalk
and cheese.
While recording a real journey, the
book is also an exploration of one
individual s psychology, her dreams and
her desires. Her very life is a book, a
fiction composed of fragments of memory,
ideas and experience.
From Henry James onwards, the literary
tradition of the American in Europe is a
rich one. Giving the tradition a feminist
twist,
Lynne Tillman
has written a book
that prepares us for the journeys
—
external and internal
-
we are likely
to make.
