SUMMARY
The territory of Fomin culture includes the Ob Basin from Teletskoie Lake in
the south up to the estuary of Tom in the north, Western and Northern Foothills
of Kuznetsk Alatau.
The results of researches that had been done up to 2001st are submitted in
the book. The author analyzed the materials of

burial grounds and several cult treas¬
ures of Fomin culture. Separate chapters are devoted to a history of studying, to a
chronology, to characteristic features of burial grounds and cult places of Fomin cul¬
ture.
The fomin s monuments of
Тор
-Ob
region have received the cultural and
chronological characteristic in M. Griaznov s works for the first time. These publica¬
tions were based on results of the archeological researches which had been carried out
by M. Griaznov in
1940s-19505.
The chronology of the fomin s monuments was being discussed for a long time.
At the beginning it was being referred to a circle of monuments of AD
600-800.
Some researchers (V. Chernetsov, V. Moshinskaia) insisted on earlier chronology (not
late AD
200-400).
Now the fomin s monuments are considered as the latest stage
of Kulay culture in the
Тор
-Ob
region. The fomin s stage of Kulay culture was dated
as: the

AD due to the researches that were carried out by
L. Chindina and T. Troitskaia in
1970s
and
1980s.
It is necessary to note, genesis of cultures of the Iron epoch is traditionally sub¬
mitted in archeology of the Southern and West Siberia as their consecutive change.
The periods of existence of cultures are divided into stages. Results of excavation are
interpreted within the model of evolutionary transformation of archeological cultures
of wide areas. Theories of migrations complicate such model occasionally. It is for
the south of West Siberia that the similar approach is poorly justified. The special
contact region has developed here for some geographical and historical reasons. Any
concepts of genesis of cultures should be more flexible for such places.
The author investigated new burial grounds complexes of Fomin culture in
1990s.
It has allowed to reconsider a problem of a cultural belonging and to specify chronol¬
ogy of the fomin s monuments on base of more informative sources.
Burial grounds of Fomin culture were arranged near the river, on edge of a high
terrace. Practically all burials were accomplished in simple tombs not appreciable on
a modem surface. A principal way of burial is the burying of part of body being cre¬
mated (near

g). The burying bones of cremated could be in some capacity (for

example, in cineraria of a birch bark). The special funeral dolls could be used
similar as in TashtyL culture in the Middle. Yenisei Basin. Single instances of body
funeral are-known·in the fomin s tombs. A.grave is·individual usually, but pair burials
there are too. Almost full absence of the weapon is typical for the majority of the fo-
min s burials·. The custom to put ¡in a tomb a piece of animal s meat was absent also

Implements in tombs have no traces of cremation fire almost ever. There were some
ceremonies after burial on all of burial grounds. Their traces were marked in a special
place of graveyards.

Steady synchronization with complexes of the first
period of Tashtyk culture in the Middle Yenisei Basin (the
2nd

is supporting it. The problem of dating so-called «weapon s treasures» (cult
places near Elykaevo and Ishim)> with the subjects of.Fomin culture was researched.
These complexes should be dated not later the, 5th c;

The research of the fomm si tombs shows other structure of a cultural complex
in comparison with previous tombs of
Küláy
culture of Novosibirsk Ob Basin.
The changes which have occurred in funeral ceremony of the population of Top-Ob
region in the first half of the First thousand AD, are not connected with the develop¬
ment of polyalternativeness of a traditional local ceremony. Even a ceremony of body
funeral in the fomin s graves is a completely other type of ceremony, than in earlier
Kulay s tombs. There were secondary burials in the fomin s graves. Quite probably,
bodies were cremated even after their storage in the air for a long time. Cremations
and body funerals are connected with two sides of one ceremony in the fomin s burials.
Both equally differ from body funeral ofKulay culture of Novosibirsk Ob Basin.
The fomin s funeral ceremony corresponds to other religious-mythological bases.
Similar innovations are impossible in former ethnic frameworks. Changes have
touched not only spiritual sphere. Materials of the fomin s settlements show the grow¬
ing value of cattle breeding that accepts half-nomadic forms. A territorial distribution
of the fomin s monuments was subdued for other principles than kulay s. It allows not
to put the fomin s monuments; into a stage
óf
development of Kulay culture, but to
distinguish special culture of
Тор
-Ob
region and of Foothills Kuznetsk Alatau. It is
reflected in stability of the basic features of a funeral ceremony in all territory.
Some similar attributes of funeral and post-funeral ceremony of Fomin culture can
be noted with what we know from graves of Tashtyk culture. Tashtyk culture is
the nearest region with the big number of similar figs. But to say about Tashtyk cul¬
ture influence on occurrence of innovations in funeral and post-funeral ceremony
ofTop^Ob region is simplification. Not forms were identical in ceremony of funeral
and post-funeral of these cultures (there are more distinctions) but religious-ideological
norms most likely. The marked innovations of funeral ceremony are not
the development of traditions for
Тор
-Ob
region, and for the Middle Yenisei Basin
also. The general source of borrowing of similar representations can be assumed. New
traditions were adapted to local funeral and post-funeral ceremony. May be it is re¬
lated with the penetration into those regions of some groups if not common
m
ethnic,
then having similar religious-mythological system at least.

It is possible to search a source of influence on a number of indirect attributes.
It is rather interesting to consider the semantics of images connected with a new type
of bronze castings from the point of view· of possible ¡innovations.. The horseman is one
of the new images frequently meeting on the fomin s bronze castings. This mythologi¬
cal character has roots in traditions of steppe cultures. We have tried to show, the
prototype of him is Iranian god Mithras. Hellenic authors had to correlate Mithrasimi-
lar cults of steppe peoples of Asia with god Dionysus worship. Symbolism, of these
cults is coincides.1 That includes images, which personify natural cycles (a bear for
example), subjects of pursuit or tearing of herbivorous, etc. They are all submitted in
art bronzes of the fomin s monuments. The
meándrous
ornament widespread on prod¬
ucts of Fomin culture (on weapons, on details of clothes, .etc.) attracts attention in this
connection.

relations of southern Asia with the population of

region, between steppes and
the taiga zone the next in turn. The immigrant components were playing an essential
role in genesis of Fomin culture. They were the representatives of cultures

steppes with strong Iranian traditions. Thus, the origin of these .ethnic groups is con¬
nected not to Central-Asian region but to the West-Asian more probably.
Destabilization of conditions in Central Asia, near. Aral and on South Ural could
promote infringement of a traditional South-Ural way of fur trade of Asia. A Sayan-
Altai way could become alternative of some time; Many new categories of bronze
products of Fomin culture have prototypes in cultures of Ural region. It is possible; the
new tradition of bronze castings has penetrated in

-Ob
region as a result of
reori¬
entation
of some craft center, which before was supplying former intermediaries in fur
trade.
The increasing of the furs trade in the first centuries B.C. had resulted in active
contacts in all the West Siberia, in opinion of the majority of researchers.

It is important to note, distribution of import and cultural stereotypes occured
through the population of zones of forest-steppe and of south taiga of West Siberia in
this epoch. The South-Ural fur way had become the basic to the 5th c.

again.
Renewal of this way found reflection in decline of Fomin culture. The chronological
indicator of the latest of the fomin s graves is reduction of number of glass beads and
precious metals. The bronze castings became more rare too.
The cultural intermediation of Ural for a taiga zone of West Siberia is becoming
much more noticeable from the middle of the First millennium. Latitude connections
had continued to influence an originality of cultural formations formed in a zone
of south taiga of West Siberia during the second half of the
1st
millennium also.
Researching monuments of Fomin culture are continuing. Further accumulation
of the materials will allow us to approach to more exact historical interpretation of
the observed phenomena.
