Countless articles and books have beci writ1 i on the Victorian mind, but relat , vely few on the Victorian body. Anthony Wohl’s new book is not just a survey of the central and local administration of public health in Victorian Britain but a detailed examination of the social and physical environment in which the people lived, and the effects of the surroundings, public and domestic, upon the people’s health. Fevers, industrial diseases, accumulated filth and inadequate sewerage, insanitary and overcrowded housing, pollution of the atmosphere and rivers —these were among the most serious hazards to health as a result of the rapid and unprecedented urban growth of the nineteenth century. As the connection between dirt and disease and between personal hygiene and health became apparent so, for the Victorians, sanitary reform took on the nature of a crusade, and step by step, in response to the findings and proddings of reform groups and local and centra’, medical officers, public health measures were introduced. Endangered Lives analyzes the timing, scope, and variety of these reforms and places particular emphasis on the growing understanding of the ^onne tion between poverty and infant and ad It deaths, and on the role that disease, malnutrition, dirt, and poor physique played in Victorian class perceptions. In treating questions of life, health and death in Victorian Britain from the point of view of the people, Professor Wohl has produced an original, lively and important book that opens our eyes to the standards of living and to the realities of daily life a hundred
