De Jong did not aim his work exclusively at historians, but made
a conscious effort to reach a broader audience. His text is thus
lively and easy to read. The work was greatly admired in the
Netherlands and showered with prizes. As a starting point for all
future research on the Netherlands during the Second World War,
De Jong s study continues to be of inestimable value.
