Performance in Africa in the Age ofAWS
Playing for Life: Performance in Africa in the Age of AIDS is a survey of African perform¬
ance that uses the focal lens of AIDS performances to examine performance more gener¬
ally on the African continent. The aim of Playing for Life is threefold. First, the work at¬
tempts to provide an introduction to the study of Africa through performance suitable
for undergraduate students. Second, it attempts to supply a sampling of Africa s rich per¬
formative resources. And third, it tries to show how Africans are working to harness the
energy of performance to help solve the most terrible of contemporary problems, the
AIDS pandemic.
This book focuses chiefly on the AIDS epi¬
demic/AIDS performances in two African coun¬
tries, South Africa and Mali. The choice is a re¬
flection of a need to provide at least two different
case views of African performance and African
performative response to the AIDS crisis. The
countries, so divergent from one another by most
social indicators
—
economy, religion, geography
and climate, colonial history, pre-colonial history,
and nature and severity of the AIDS epidemic
—
offer excellent contrasts from one another, making
them ideal selections for this work.
In addition to the maps, charts, and photographs
sprinkled throughout the volume, the chapters have
been illustrated with audio and video clips featured on
the accompanying compact disc (CD). Besides the CD,
which comes with the book, it is possible to purchase a
20-minute documentary, AIDS and the Arts in Africa, a
visual summary of Playing for Life produced by the au¬
thor. See page for
xxiv
details on how to order. The au¬
thor s proceeds from the sales of this book will be do¬
nated to assist AIDS orphans in South Africa and Mali.
Louise M. Bourgault is a professor in the Department of Communication and Perfor¬
mance Studies at Northern Michigan University,
Marquette.
She has been involved in the
study of African media and performance for nearly
30
years and has conducted fieldwork
in more than fifteen African countries. She has lectured on African media, performance,
and related issues at African, European, and American universities. Professor Bourgault
is the winner of the Choice Book award for her
1995
volume, Mass Media in Sub-Saha-
ran Africa (Indiana University Press). She has also been honored as a Fulbright Research
Scholar and as a Peter White Scholar. In
2000
she received the Distinguished Faculty
Award at Northern Michigan University.
